Durability: PSP Phat vs PSP Slim

I currently own a PSP Slim (piano black). My two brothers own a slim as well. But recently, one of the PSPs suffered from mobo damage (motherboard). Could it be because the PSP Slim isn’t as sturdy as the Phat? My brother claims he never dropped his PSP. And yet having brought it to a technician, the guy said that this usually results from the PSP having been dropped or heavily sat on. I’m assuming my brother dropped his.

So could this be the drawback for having a slimmer frame for the PSP? I have heard a lot of stories about Phat owners having dropped their PSPs more than once and rarely had any mobo problems like small pixel lines appearing across their video files or on the screen itself.

Now, I’m actually considering getting a PSP Phat just to see the difference (and also to have a back-up unit in case the Slim gets f*cked up for some reason). Yes, the Slim has faster memory and a larger hard drive space for the firmware but for materials of construction, it appears that Sony didn’t use similar frame material for the Slim. Indeed, it’s significantly lighter than the Phat but it appears that longevity-wise, the Phat trumps the Slim by a mile.

How about you? What kind of PSP do you own? Phat or Slim?
