Watching More Mecha Anime

Macross Frontier

Lately, I find myself watching more mecha anime than I have in the past year. Or perhaps I’m spending more time watching anime that’s not Gundam-related. Either way, I’m really enjoying watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and the 25th Anniversary series Macross Frontier. I can imagine my friend Joey asking where Code Geass is in that watchlist. I’ll bring myself up to speed soon enough. For now, I’ll enjoy these two. Gurren Lagann is already finished airing so I’m watching the fansubs without having the wait for the next episode. As for Macross Frontier, I’m around seven to eight episodes behind but I’m definitely liking the series, most especially the soundtrack. It’s the only thing playing over and over again in my iPod. ^_^

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Personal opinion, I currently cannot find any other super robot series that can top Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. There’s simply no other series that embodies or captures the spirit of super robot pilots the way Gurren Lagann did. I’ve seen Shin Getter Armageddon. I’ve seen Mazinkaiser. I’ve seen Gaogaigar Final. Prior to watching Gurren Lagann, these three series were the ultimate in super robot spirit for me. But after seeing the first half of Gurren Lagann, the rest felt like wimps beside Simon and Kamina and the rest of the Dai Gurren Dan (Great Gurren Brigade). It’s hard to really express super robot spirit in words (especially since I’ll end up screaming most of the time if I was to express it verbally or audibly) so I would suggest that you grab the series and watch it instead. If you’re a mecha fan and know the difference in the nature of super robot and real robot series, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that Gurren Lagann stands proudly on top of the super robot anime listing as the most awesome series ever.

If you dig super robots, watch Gurren Lagann. If you like fighter planes, lots of singing and awesome mecha aerial dogfights, watch Macross Frontier. They won’t disappoint. ^_^
