Farewell to a Grandmother

Hokage's Funeral

I received a call from my parents yesterday evening that my grandmother had just passed away. She died in her sleep at around 3 in the morning, Manila time.

Part of me was deeply saddened but at the same time, part of me was happy that she is finally resting, reunited with my beloved grandfather in heaven. Nanay as her grandchildren fondly call her, practically raised most of us when we were still wee ones. Back when she could still remember everyone and when she could still see, she would visit everyone whenever she could. And whenever school was out or we were on holiday, I’d be there up north with her. Nanay took good care of us all. She was an intelligent woman. I believe I got my love for reading from her. As well as the habit re-reading books that I really like.

But now, she’s really gone. She’s finally resting. If I am to be really sad about anything, it would be the fact that I am not there when the rest of the finally bids her their last farewell. Three of us cousins are abroad right now for work and won’t be back in time for the funeral.

I love you, Nanay. Your influence made me the man that I am now. Although you won’t be around to see me have my own family, I’ll make sure that even in heaven, you’ll be proud of me. Till we meet again.
